QuestionQUESTION: IF my mouse has mites (not too sure), can my dog catch them? How close would they have to be?
ANSWER: Dear Heather,
No, mouse mites will not transfer to a dog. Do treat the mouse for mites right away, though.

QUESTION: What other skin conditions could a white mouse have? My vet is not completely sure that it is mites and my other mice don't have the same irritated skin.
AnswerDear Heather,
While mites are the most common reason for mouse skin ailments, mice can also have ringworm (which both you and your dog can get), mange, various other fungal infections, or a bacterial infection. A trained vet (ask for one trained in 'exotics' if there isn't a special small furry pet vet) can diagnose the problem with a skin flake under a microscope.
Mice often have mites but never show any symptoms until they are sick, weak, older, depressed, or live alone. This is why one mouse may show signs of mites while its cage-mates appear healthy. All the mice, as well as bedding, cage, and toys, must be treated for mites for the problem to disappear.
Best of luck.
