Question
would it be ok if i used dirt as bedding but i would mix it with the wood shavings

Answer
Dear Sabrina,

Mice do love to dig, and soil is excellent for this.

However, there is always the possibility of bringing germs, small insects, plants, or other substances into the mouse cage which could be harmful to the mice.  Dirt from a trafficked area is definitely out.  Even country dirt from where little field mice happily survive can easily import field mouse mites into your cage that your mice have no immunity to.

The alternative is soil that you buy for gardening.  The advantage is that there shouldn't be organisms in it.  The disadvantage is that you really don't know what chemicals were used to prepare it.  Of course you would avoid anything with added chemicals or fertilizers.

The bottom line is it's a judgment call.  For no risk, avoid the dirt.  For more mousie fun, get the cleanest soil you can.  Although I don't use dirt in my cage, I do occasionally let the mice have a food-grade potted plant.  You may be able to find pots of wheatgrass specially prepared for pets or humans to consume.  Mice love to hide in the plant and tunnel.  Do  make sure the plant is edible first!

I hope I have helped you in your decision.

squeaks n giggles,
