giving birth or dying?

Question
Hello, i own 4 pet mice since around 2 months ago. They're 3 females and a male. I always see how the male tries to hump the ladies or something but i never really see him do it. A couple of weeks ago one of the ladies started to grow on her sides and i thought maybe she was pregnant.
Last night i came into my room and found her asleep, i instinctively petted her but she didn't run away or jump as usual, i noticed she was cold and didn't move. I put her into a small cage away from the other mice and been trying to keep her warm and comfortable. I have no clue if it's normal that she's been bleeding, doesn't move much and when she does she walks in a rather weird way (just about slides actually). I'm afraid she might be dying or something. Sorry for the long question.

Answer
Dear Mesha,

I am so sorry about your little mouse.  Yes, she sounds like she is close to death.  If you have a vet you can afford to go to you can have her put to sleep, but they can be really expensive.  A really nice vet will only charge a little because it only takes a tiny bit of toxin but clinics will charge you like $85.  Maybe you or someone in the house is brave enough to kill her but I never am.

Make her as comfortable as you can.  You are right to take her out of the cage since she is bleeding and got sick so fast.  You might give her a bit of yogurt if she can't eat seeds.

The most likely thing is that it was a tumor in her that made her grow.  Now it is killing her.  Or people can have something called an ectopic pregnancy, which means the baby is growing in the wrong place (in the fallopian tube), and that can be fatal.  It's possible that this happened to her.  She might also have had a stroke.

Your other two ladies will be growing soon.  Females don't stay single very long when there is a male around, once they are old enough.  Let me know if you have questions about pregnancy, birth, or raising babies.  I wrote a long and informative letter about mouse pregnancy and raising babies  but they haven't posted my stuff yet because I need a certain number of ratings and people forget to rate.  it would be helpful if you would rate this answer.  I will also send it to you if you like; you can give me your email address.

I am so sorry about your little mousie.  At least she had a nice life because she was with friends and not alone.  That's important.  I hope she goes quickly and painlessly.

peace,

Natasha
