mice from live traps

Question
Hello, I live in the Chicago area and have had mice invade my home over the winter.  I  purchased the catch and release traps but was wondering if it is still to cold to release them (it is still getting in the low 30's at night)  Is there a way to trap them now and then release them later when it gets warmer.  Does it matter if I release them individually or should I release them as a group so they could get through the transition together?   Thanks for your help.

Answer
Dear Kristin,

Thank you for your kindness towards your tiny invaders.  Because they are used to living in a building, they would appreciate not being put out when it is still so cold out.  I'd prefer not to let mice go until the nights are in the mid 40s.  You can keep them in an aquarium with a lid on it.  Rat and mouse food is available at the pet store, and they will need a wheel.  Make sure you figure out the logistics of putting water in beforehand.  Probably the best thing to do is use a water bottle but make sure they have raw veggies such as carrots and celery to get liquid in case they don't figure it out.

Then you can release them all together.  Find someplace wooded if you can, over a mile from home because they can travel a mile.  Leave them in a sheltered spot with a bunch of food to help them adjust, and some bedding or even a box if it makes sense.

Squeaks n giggles,
Natasha
