Question
I have a white feeder mouse named fitz who I've had about 8 months. Until about 2 months ago he had a playmate, daisy, who suddenly passed away. I've noticed in the past week or so that fitz is itching a lot and now I've noticed a spot on the back of his neck missing hair. I'm just curious as to what it might be and what I could do.

Answer
Hair loss is quite common in old mice (12 months +). However since he is itching a lot he may have fleas or mites which are often introduced by hay/straw. Check his skin for bites and the bedding you use.

He may be scratching a lot out of boredom like birds pull their own feathers out. It's not your fault his playmate died but mice are social creatures and really need the company of other mice. Obviously if he has fleas or mites you won't want to get him a friend until the problem has cleared up. You can look in pet stores or go to your vet for a cream or spray for fleas in mice.

You could also try oil of evening primrose and gently massage it into his skin. This is a supplement and can be taken internally or externally. It usually comes in capsules and is great for sensitive skin. It also won't do him any harm if he licks it off.

If the skin is flaky and look like he has dandruff he could have mange. This is very contagious so wash your hands throughly and seek your vets advise. You may be able to find a product suitable for mice/small animals with mange in your pet store.

I hope his fur grows back soon. Please feel free to ask any more questions.
