Disinfecting injured ear

Question
I just noticed that my pet mouse had some dried blood on her ear, and the ear looked a little red. I was wondering if there were any safe antibacterial solutions I could use to make sure the cut on her ear doesn't get infected. Are there any homemade remedies? Or should I get something from the pet store?

Answer
Hi Jo,

Betadine is an iodine solution you can find at just about any general store or pharmacy, and is a great, safe way to disinfect mouse wounds.  It needs to be diluted with water to the color of tea, then you can swab or dab the area with a cotton swab.  Wipe excess away once you've cleaned the ear with it.  Neosporin or other antibiotic ointments are also useful, but you don't need to put very much on because she'll likely just lick it all off once you've set her down.  Cleaning the injury a couple of times a day should keep her healthy and infection-clear.

Hope her little ear feels better soon!  :)
