Question
hi natasha,

i have 2 female mice who were definitely pregnant. one gave birth and was nursing her babies. another suddenly had a flat tummy like she was no longer pregnant and there was blood on the bedding but no babies anywhere. did she have a miscarriage? is there such a thing for mice? i was researching on the net and came across an article on the reabsorption of mice embryos. could you also explain that please?

Answer
Dear Nicolette,

You are right on all counts.  'Embryo reabsorption" is the same as a 'spontaneous abortion' which is the same as a miscarriage.  Something went wrong and she lost her babies.

It is lucky that there is another nursing mom in the cage because the mouse who lost her babies will probably help the mom mouse out and give her a break when she needs it.  It's also possible that she will almost adopt these babies and have no negative effects of losing her babies.  Do keep them together.

If you continue to breed, she might not be the best candidate.  What I read about mouse miscarriage is that there are genetic predispositions to miscarry.  Still, there is no harm in trying one more time.

My condolences to that mouse and my congratulations to the other.

squeaks,

Natasha
