Overweight mice

Question
Hello -- this may sound silly, but I am concerned that some mice I keep as pets are getting way too fat.

They are about 1 1/2 years old, female. Several of them are so fat they have a hard time exercising on their wheels.

I give them a mix of rodent food I buy from a local feed store, but I'm assuming I need to change their diet or give them more stimulation in their enviornment.  (I keep five-a-piece in glass aquariums). Any suggestions?  (Note: I would be willing to make up some dietry food for them myself if there is such a thing).  Thanks

Answer
Dear Annetrte,

Your mice are probably all related, or at least of the same line, I'm guessing. Some mice have the genetic inclination to get fat. As long as their diet is sensible and they have wheels to run in, they're OK.  If you think maybe that mix isn't the greatest-- and just because a pet store sells something doesn't mean it's healthy-- get them some (boring) chunk or pellet food and liven up their meals with fresh vegetables.  You can also give them  more things to climb on.

Anyway it's a relief that several are getting fat, which means it's not a tumor or other illness which one has to worry about if it's only one fat mouse. Enjoy your little handfuls!
