Is the human formula killing my mice?

Question
Hello, about 5 days ago I found 3 baby mice in a nest (they look about 2 weeks old). I had scared the mother and she didn't come back so I took the babies in. For the last few days I've gave them human baby formula and tonight 2 died. So I was wondering is human formula killing the mice? Thanks for your time.

Answer
Dear Erika,

The mice died from a combination of missing all the things that their mom is supposed to be giving them.  They were exposed and starving before you found them; their body temperatures have fluctuated like they shouldn't, they were most certainly in shock, and they haven't been getting mouse milk every half hour.  People just can't replace mother mice.

I recommend kitten formula (KMR) for the best success with foundling mouse pups.  However, I have certainly heard success stories with human formula.  In any case, don't blame yourself for their failure to survive.  Mice just aren't made to be raised by humans, and it's pretty incredible that it sometimes works!

Best of luck with the remaining mouse.  I wish her good health.
