Mouse Tail Tapping

Question

Avalanche
last thursday, i got my first pet mouse from my local Petco ive had her a little over a week, and i still havent been able to bond with her, i try to put my hand in, talk softly to her, and hand her treats, but this will all be fixed in good time i hope. my real issue lays here: everyone i go near her, or even when im not, she takes her tail and bangs it on the cage, or floor, tapping it, and squints her eyes. Does this mean she is scared or nervous? Also, she breathes heavily....and hates when i look at her hut (when she isnt in it) ive done a little bit of research, but i cant find anything....help!

Answer
Dear Kelly,

Mice rattle their tails as a warning. It's a sign of aggression. You are in her territory. Try to antagonize her as little as possible while still trying to make friends. If you can approach her in such a way as to not cause her to rattle, attempt to do so. If you go toward her with your hand and she taps her tail, move your hand back a wee bit until she stops. You  may be able to slowly win her trust this way.  If not, she will have to learn to trust you despite her initial reluctance. One way to make it easy to pick up a reluctant mouse is to wait until she has gone into her toilet paper roll (indispensable in any mouse cage) and pick her up by putting your two hands on the two ends. She may not want to climb directly out onto your hand from there-- even some of my very sweet mice choose not to do so-- but if you let her crawl out on another safe surface, it will be easier to approach her from there and because it's not her territory, she will be less aggressive. When you put her back in her cage always do so with an open palm such that she can walk on her own into the cage. When she is tamer she may turn around and choose to stay on your hand.

Have fun with your new pet <:3  )--~
