SCENT GLANDS IN GUINEA PIGS

21 14:18:38

Question
DEAR ANDY
OUR TWOMALE GUINEA PIGS HAVE STICKY PATCHES ON THE LOWER PART OF THEIR BACKS NEAR WHERE THE TAIL WOULD BE. THE SKIN APPEARS TO BE A LITTLE CRUSTY AND COVERED IN A SERUM LIKE SUBSTANCE THE HAIR IS ALSO CRUSTED AND MATTED. COULD YOU PLEASE ADVISE AS TO WETHER THEY HAVE THEIR SCENT GLANDS HERE.? WE HAVE TRIED WASHING THIS SUBSTANCE OFF BUT TO NO AVAIL.   AMANDA

Answer
Hi Amanda

The scent glands are found near the piggies anus rather than their backs so if I were you i would get it checked by a vet in case there is a mite problem or something similar. If I could see your pigs I could probably tell you if there is anything wrong. Perhaps you could send me a picture of the area?

If you want to do this let me know and I will give you my email address.

Andy
