Question
Hello, i have had my hampster for over 2 years now and is the third hampster ive had, however i am getting older and dont have the time to play and look after my hampster as much as i should, so heres the problem after leaving it for a while to live in its cage ( the conditions of the cage withouth cleaning it ) i decided to clean it and when i changed all the bedding n saw dust i  played with the little guy for 10 mins but i noticed a bald patch roughly a fingerprint wide and so i checked the net for answers and they said about mites but i dont see anything on him moving when i look closer so i dont think its mites (can mites transfer to humans ?) so what can it be and do i need to take him to the vet becasue i just dont have the time to do that - is there any home remedies i can try - ure advice on this would be very much appreciated.

Answer
Hi Duncan,

Since your hamster is pretty old, the fur loss may be due to old age.  Fur loss in older hamsters usually occurs on the hindleg, belly, and hip area first, and it's nothing to worry about.  Just make sure your hamster is eating a good quality hamster mix with plenty of variety.  You can also crush up a yeast tablet on the hamster's food every other day (less as the hamster's fur grows back), or purchase vitamin drops from the pet store.

If the hamster has other symptoms, such as flakiness, scabs, sores, or if it is lethargic or scratching, you should consult with a vet.

But, like I said, if fur loss is not accompanied by any other sign of illness, then it's probably just due to old age.  And, perhaps you can get someone to help out with the cleaning of the cage, since the cage really should be cleaned every week, as a dirty cage invites bacteria.  Also, make sure you're using Aspen or Carefresh bedding.  (Pine and Cedar beddings are dangerous to small animals; they cause respiratory infections and skin allergies.)

Have a great fourth of July!
