Question
QUESTION: i got a male hamster first tiny little thing not sure what breed he is then got what i think is a tri coloured syrian female still not sure but lately ive had to seperate them as she is biting his leg n dragging him down the tubes when i did she has put weight on i dont know wheteher this is because they dont have to share but also have notiiced she is more active and has started to try and gnaw through the bars to get out perhaps lonely ? but now her nipples are showing more i dont know whether this is beacuse she is fatter or perhaps in heat ? please help does this sound like she is pregnant or just lonely fat and in heat ?
ANSWER: Hi Toni,

It is possible she is pregnant. A female Syrian hamsters sides will generally poof out (look fatter) about 10 days into her pregnancy. When this happens and she is pregnant, you can expect the babies in 6-7 days. If she does not have any babies within the next week, then more than likely she isn't pregnant and the being more active is just from her being in heat.
Syrian hamsters do not get lonely, they are solitary, which means they like being alone and having their cage all to themselves.
The gnawing on the cage is a sign that she is bored. Try giving her some wooden chew sticks or even a dog biscuit to chew on.

QUESTION: she has started looking fatter but the gnawing has only started since the male and female hamsters have been separated into different cages and now the male has started doing it aswell she has been extremely active for the past couple of days but today she hasn't come out of her house at all not even for scrambled eggs or her dinner which she normally sits and waits for but has taken all the bedding in with her to her house i don't want to disturb her incase she has had her babies but i read that when hamsters hunch over and become more active than usual when they are pregnant they normally give birth with in two days her cage is due to get cleaned today should i just leave it for a week and see if the babies start exploring or be brave and lift the house lid off and see if there are any in there ?

Answer
Hello again Toni,

If she has taking all the bedding into her house and hasn't come out, then she may have given birth. If you put your ear close to where the house is and she has given birth, you should be able to hear the babies suckling or making little noises. If you can't hear anything, then wait until she comes out of the house and then try lifting the house lid off (if it comes off easy) or see if she will let you pick her up and if she does you can check her teats and you should be able to tell if babies have been suckling (the area around the teats should look kind of wet). If you are still not sure if she has babies or not after trying the things I have mentioned, then yes, wait at least a week before checking.
