impacted rectum

Question
I belive my ferret has an impacted rectum.  He has a pea-sized bump by his anus.  I used clumping litter and am wondering if there is a piece of the litter in the bump.  Is there anything I can do to help get the litter out, or if I should take him to the vet?

I will not be using clumping litter in the future if this is what happened!

thank you

Answer
Hi Wendy,

I do not think it's an impacted rectum but maybe an infected anal gland or, if "descented" an incomplete anal gland removal and impaction. Yes, you should get him to the vet because it could become infected if it is not already.

I have been using clumping litter for the last 10 years with no problem -- I've never seen a ferret even try to eat the litter.

Good luck!

Sincerely,

Adrienne Mortimer
