Question
We have a 3 yr- old (approx.) male ferret. He is a real sweetheart and has been around other ferrets before.  We took him in in December of 2006.He has been around other ferrets  a female) and has taken to them readily. If we got another , would a female be preferable. Would there be less chanse that they would fight.  He didn't fight with his last mate. He is pretty much acclimated to our house.  After 7 months could he be too territorial for a mate?

Answer
Hi Vickie, thanks for writing.  His new companion could be male or female, it doesn't matter much as long as everyone involved is spayed and neutered. It's up to the individual ferret's temperament and personality. Part of the fun of having ferrets.  :)  It's possible he may be territorial now and only interested in his humans, and not other ferrets, but you won't know until you try. We always recommend you introduce a ferret to his possible new mate under safe and controlled conditions (in a playpen or closed room at the shelter, for example) and see if they get along. Try this with 2 or 3 "candidates," and good luck!  Remember to quickly separate them if they start to fight and clearly do not get along.
