Question
Hello,
I was hoping you may be able to help me out with my ferret. He is a male, 5 years old to the month, and about 2 lbs. He recently (3 months ago) had adrenal surgery and he does appear to be in much better spirits. However, he is continuing to loose his hair. Do you know what may be causing this? The vet said that the surgery was a success and that the tests showed the lump was benign. Thank you so much for your help.
Regards,
Patrick Johnson

Answer
Hello Patrick and Miller,

I am so sorry to hear that Miller hasn't been feeling well but it is good news that he came through the surgery just fine.

It could be that, since winter is here, he had a late shedding season and that is why he is continuing to lose his hair. Does he have blackheads on his tail that you've noticed at all? Is his tail very oily? That could be the reason for the hair loss, but I seriously doubt it. Quite honestly, Patrick, I would call the vet that did the adrenal surgery and let him know that your little guy is still experiencing hair loss. I have never personally dealt with a ferret after adrenal surgery, so I am not totally sure if that is normal or not. Like I said before, it could be that he just needs to go through another shedding cycle and then his fur will return, but I'm not sure if that means he should continue losing it. I would definitely make a call to your vet and see what the problem could be.

I hope this helped you, even a little, and if you have further questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to let me know and I will find the answers for you.

Also, please don't hesitate to let me know how Miller comes through this.

Sincerely,
Emilee Andrews
