Question
I have 2 ferrets which ive owned for about a month and they are aproximatley 4 months old.  i woke up the other morning to minx the female sitting alone in her cage with a bloody nose and in shock. i rushed her to the animal er and she was put in the icu in an oxygen tank. she stayed over night was given xrays and had her brain check with the results of an apparent trauma. her blood work came out normal and there appears to be no brain damage ect. i took her home monday night and she appeared to be fine.  ive been keeping her in a kennel as advised to by the vets for a few day and she has been eating her kibble (they gave me oxbow bc she wasnt eating their dry food but turns out she just didnt like the brand) last night i noticed she started hacking and continued to do it throughout the night and at one point spit out her food. other than these random outbursts she seems to be her normal self interested in her surroundings doesnt want to stay in her kennel.
her last poop was a little wet but pretty normal.  she had been eating oxbow at the er so im wondering if this has to do with a switch from wet to dry? or is it something unrelated and has a hairball? i give both my kids the ferrelax a few times a week and since this occured her every few hrs.  since the vets released her with a what appeared to be a clean bill im wondering if i need to bring her in again or am i over-reacting. the hacking seems to only occur while or shortky after eating (i think).

Answer
Hello Erin,

I'm pretty sure that what you're describing is a normal ferret behavior. Ferrets tend to eat faster than they can chew, so sometimes they need to hack it up a little. I would make a quick call to the vet to make sure that this is normal after her ordeal, just to be sure. I hope this helps!
