Question
I have a 2 yr old jill, who has not been spaded, for the last 3-4 months her vulva has been swollen,i think she is on season, is it to late to have here spaded.. also for the last few weeks she has started to go bald, but she also has lots of bites and i found a flee, i keep sprayin her with frontline for cats, but i cant see any difference, thankyou

Answer
Hi Keeley:

I don't think they will spay her while she is in heat, but she MUST be taken out of heat with what they call a "jill jab" that your vet must give her. Then, after she is out of heat, she can and MUST BE spayed or she will die.   Female ferrets who are not mated MUST receive a jill jab, be spayed or be mated or they die of anemia.

PLEASE take this ferret to the vet IMMEDIATELY or she will continue to get weaker and weaker until she dies a horrible death.

As far as the fur loss goes, that could be due to the hormones - get the jill jab IMMEDIATELY. If you think she has fleas, you MUST not only treat her, but all her bedding and where she plays and spends all her time so they don't just get back on her again. She MUST BE REMOVED FROM THE AREA FOR AT LEAST 24 hours while the area is sprayed for fleas, dried completely, vacuumed, THEN returned to the area.  USE THE KITTEN DOSAGE of flea treatment for her.

Hope that helps - but nothing will help if you don't get her to a vet immediately; she will be dead if she doesn't receive a jill jab; THEN you can start planning that appointment for spaying her.

Sincerely,

Jacquie Rodgers
