Question
Hi Sandy,
Q1:
I have a golden retriever, 1.5 yrs old. He barks when he meets other dog during our walk. From his gesture, I think he wants to play. Is there a way to stop him barking?
Q2:
he rarely jump on us now but if he does, we turn away and
he will sit down very quickly but to a stranger, he still
jumps e.g when I chat to a stranger or our neighbour on the walk and IF he is excited,he still jumps. What I should do ?

Thanks!karen

Answer
He probably does want to play. I love a game from Leslie McDevitt's book "Control Unleashed" for this situation. Start with something less interesting - if he glances at it, tell him "look at that" click and give a treat. The idea is that he will learn that by glancing at interesting stuff, he can play a cookie getting game with you. It is important to click to direct his attention back to you as soon as he looks, before he has time to get worked up and barking. If he isn't able to do this, you are too close and need to go further away. For jumping on people, I would teach him a good solid sit/stay. He can't do that and jump on people at the same time.
