Socializing our Cockapoo

Question
Hi we have a 10 week old cockapoo who can't go 'out' until his second jab in 2
weeks.  We have a friend who has an adult dog and also a king charles puppy a
little older than our own.   Is it a good idea to invite our friend with his dogs to
our home?  IF yes, what's the best way to manage the situation?
thanks

Answer
Hi Penny

You must follow your vet's advice on this one with regards socialisation.  Its great you are thinking about it as it is so vital.. It is a case of weighing up the risk of catching disease with the risk of undersocialisation on the puppy's future personality.  12 weeks is actually the end of the sensitive period so much socialisation must have been done by then.

This being the case, it is essential that you get your puppy to meet other dogs (and people/animals) before the next jab.  Dogs must be fully vaccinated and can come to your home so you needn't put your pup on the ground.  He can meet people from your arms so take him out and about with you when possible.

I am assuming the CKC pup is fully vaccinated?  if so, as they are such a gentle breed it should be fine to just let them meet on the ground in disease risk areas.  ensure both owners are present and crouched on the ground so the pups can return for reassurance.  if either pup is worried or overwhelmed then give them a break or manage the pup which is being over the top by gently holding him away from the other until he is calmer.  the adult dog should cope fine if he/she is well socialized - again just let them get on with it under supervision and intervene if you are not comfortable.  the garden is always a good place to do introductions.

check with your vet first please, to be on the safe side.  Enjoy your puppy!
