Question
Hi my 7 year old great Dane has just been forced out of the upstairs of  my house to the basement he is very comfortable down there because it is a fully furnished basement. but whenever i leave the basement and go upstairs he starts to yelp. I have tried to do the technique of waiting a couple minutes and then coming back when he gets quiet but it isn't working very well. if you could please write back soon or we might have to give him up.

Answer
Tristan,

It sounds as though you have a very interesting situation on your hands.

If your dog does not stop yelping using the 'wait-a-couple-minutes-after-he-stops-barking-and-let-him-out' technique, then he might need discipline.  He needs to know that crying when you leave is not acceptable.  (He might also just be lonely, so if you have the resources and energy, getting another dog as a companion might not be a bad idea... but I know that getting another dog is not always an option...)

Dogs tend to understand discipline in ways that mimic their interactions with each other.  To get a detailed explanation as to how you can appropriately and fairly discipline him, please contact me at Training.Inquiry@gmail.com
