small morning poops in house

Question
I adopted a 7 year old small golden male 6 weeks ago.  He is a perfect dog except that a couple of weeks ago we started to notice that on some mornings he had deposited small, round, mostly hard poops (1-5) in the bedroom. He sleeps on the floor on a dog bed next to our bed.
The behavior seems unrelated to anything.
He is feed twice a day (Naturo for sensitive stomachs like they feed him at the dog rescue) and goes out to poop in the morning and in the evening. He usually leave a cup-size pile of well formed stool.
Occasionally he seems to have trouble pooping in that he will leave a pile and then take a few steps a try again, straining a little.
I have never had a dog before and am unsure what to do.
Thank you in advance for your help

Answer
Hi Naomi,

Thank you for writing to me about your new family member.

The first thing I always recommend to a full vet exam to determine if there is any underlying medical condition.

From what you have described, it sounds like your dog could have constiptation.  Try adding some canned pumpkin or cook up some squash or sweet potato and add it to his food..maybe 1/4-1/2 cup.  Not only is it very healthy but it is fiber, which is great for constipation.

Best of Luck
