My dog will not drink any water.

Question
My nine year old hound mix started acting strangely last night.  He could not get comfortable, he just kept lying down and getting right back up.  He was also noticeably shaking.  I took him to the vet and he does not have a fever and his blood work came back fine.  We were given pain killers and told to watch him carefully.  I was able to get him to eat a little;but, he will not drink any water?  Why is this?  What should I do?

Answer
Hi Janet :-)

It sounds like your Dog had a Epileptic seizure. Some Dogs, after having a seizure, refuse to eat or drink. It is excellent that he is eating normally.

But he will need his fluids so you are going to have to force feed him. It's not as bad as it sounds and will not upset him.

You need to purchase a dropper from your Pharmacist and fill this with water. Then put the tip of the dropper into your Dogs mouth and squeeze the other end of the dropper.

The liquid contained in the dropper will be released and it will make him lick the fluid as it drips into his mouth. Do this 5 times but release the liquid slowly into his mouth.

Do this every 2-3 hours until he starts drinking on his own. If he is still refusing to drink tomorrow, then contact your Vet incase your Dog needs to go in for some more tests to find out what is going on.

But the behaviour you noticed in your Dog, is what my Dog does prior to having a Epileptic seiure. His first seizure hit him hard too and he refused to drink or eat.

Take care and all the best and please leave me a comment.
