split duclaw

Question
It looks like my dog's duclaw was split on the side and bleeding. We were able to snip the small part that was splintered and cleaned it.  However, she keeps licking it and at times holding it up.  She is able to walk on it though.  I can't tell if there is anything else wrong, but it does not appear to be.

Answer
A broken dewclaw can be very painful because the nail can be broken in the "quick".  This is very similar to the pain a human would feel if he/she cut her fingernail too short.  The fact that your dog let you cut part that was splintered is a good sign.  Most dogs are so painful they won't let you even touch the foot.  You didn't mention excessive bleeding, so I assume that wasn't a problem.  Dewclaws will bleed alot when injured.

The typical treatment for a broken dewclaw is to cut the nail back beyond the point of the break and to apply a pressure bandage.  The bandage helps stop the bleeding and prevents dirt from accumulating on the nail.  The nail will regrow in time and should be fine.  I would be concerned about the pain and possiblity of infection.  So, continue to monitor our pet for the next 2-3 days.  If she continues to hold her foot up or limp while walking, you should take her to your veterinarian for pain medication and antibiotics.
