Question
Hello. My pug has greenish puss coming from her anus. Do you have any thoughts about what this might be and what can be done to cure this? I am on a very tight budget and don't have the extra money for a Vet bill. Thank you for your time, I really really appreciate your help/advice.

Answer

Hi Denise,

Green pus is usually a symptom of an infection. Are you sure the pus is coming from your dog's anus, and not her vagina? If it truly is coming from your dog's anus, it might be an abscess. If it's really coming from her vagina, your dog may have vaginitis, a urinary  tract infection, or even cancer.  An infection needs an antibiotic to clear it up, that's something which isn't available over the counter. It's also something that can get worse if you don't treat it promptly (which can also make for a longer and more costly treatment).

If you are having trouble afford veterinary care, first talk to your regular vet. Ask your veterinarian if he or she will let you work out a payment plan. Many veterinarians are willing to work out a weekly or monthly payment plan so that you do not have to pay the entire cost of veterinary care up front. Another option is to contact your local shelter or Humane Society. Some shelters operate or know of local subsidized veterinary clinics or veterinary assistance programs. If you happen to live within driving distance to veterinary school, check with them to see if they offer discount services to the public. There are two special credit cards to apply for which help with medical bills (including veterinary bills) read about them here:
