Full grown 2 1/2 lb. yorkie!

Question
I bought a female yorkie about 2 months ago in hopes of breeding her. I checked both her parents and their pedigrees, both were "DNA tested champions" and both had health certificates. I did a lot of homework in finding a reputable breeder and I was very careful to ask all the questions. Well... My little Zoey is weighing in at a whopping 2 1/2 lbs now and she is 6 months old! I don't think she will get much bigger. What will become of my little Zoey? So far she has had no health issues, but I find myself constantly worrying about her! I have 3 kids (all under 5) and 2 dogs (one of which is a great dane!) And will I ever be able to breed her?

Answer
Jennine,

Unfortunately, you will not be able to breed your baby girl.  It is not advisable to breed a Yorkie that weighs less than 5 pounds.  Some people will take a chance on a 4 pounder but it is unadvisable.  Since your baby is already six months old and only 2 1/2 pounds I think it is safe to say she will never be big enough.

That being said you have no idea how many people would kill to get a Yorkie that small.  Most breeders do everything they can to produce puppies that are small.  The smaller the better because you can get more money for them and they are in high demand.

Her small size makes her more susceptible to injury (being stepped on by a great Dane!) but does not necessarily mean she will have health problems.  It is true that they say the really tiny ones can have problems but over the years I have not found that to be the case.

As long as you keep her from getting trampled by the Great Dane and you don't allow the small children to carry or hold her while standing up she should be fine.  The biggest danger to a small Yorkie is being dropped or stepped on.  Good Luck with your baby girl and try not to worry so much.  She should be fine.
