Question
we have recently had a litter of pups which 5 are black and tan but 1 was born silver can you pleaes advise why this has happened many thanks janet

Answer
Janet,

There are a couple of reasons this could have happened. Somewhere in the bloodline there was a mating with a non-yorkie.  The resulting litter could have been similar to yours.  Then it is possible to skip generations and everything appears to be normal and then surprise a puppy that does not look like the others.  Because it can skip generations there is no telling where the non-yorkie mating occurred.  It is possible that even the breeder is unaware of it.

Another reason this occurred could be because your female mated with a non-yorkie and you are unaware of it.  Dogs are different than humans in that they can have babies from more than one father.  An example of this would be if your female was bred with three different males it is possible that she could have puppies from each father.

What it boils down too is that you have a puppy that is not a purebred yorkie.  Some unscrupulous breeders will eliminate the puppy so there is no evidence that the bloodline is not pure.  If you are going to be breeding professionally you have a problem because the chances that this will happen again are good.  Anyone you sell a puppy too that plans on breeding should be told that the bloodline is not pure.  My advise to you would be to only sell the puppies to people who are not going to breed them.  Many breeders have signed agreements with customers stating they will not breed their dogs so it is not an unusual request.

Keep in mind that you may not get as much for the puppies because of this problem, which is the reason people either hide the odd puppy or eliminate it.
