dry skin

Question
My Yorkie female had pups 6 weeks ago...  for the first time ever, I've noticed that she has dry flaky skin now.  Her diet hasn't changed, nor have I changed her bathing products.  Is there anything you can suggest I do to remedy this?  She looks like she has a bad case of dandruff.
Thanks in advance!

Answer
Anita,

Do you have any children?  If so you know that having a baby can and does change the chemistry in your body. Well the same is true for dogs only on a larger scale because they have more than one baby. Yorkies do have dry skin problems so she may have developed this problem anyway but it is difficult to tell.

You may need to supplement her diet with vitamins to replace what she is not getting because of the nursing puppies or because of chemical changes in her body because of having puppies.  I would try to go longer between baths to give her body a chance to get back to normal and to keep the oils in her skin longer.  You should call your vet and ask what vitamins they recommend and if it will put your mind at ease, when you take the puppies in for their first shots you should take mom along and ask the vet what he suggests for the dry skin.

Oh, congratulations on becoming a grandmother!
