Question
Hello, We have a Chocolate lab, "Bella" and we gave her a piece of shrimp about 6 days ago..she has not been 100% herself lately and her nose has been warm. Do you have any knowledge about shrimp making dogs sick?.....Thanks for any input!

Melissa

Answer
I have never heard of it.  Most of what we eat is OK for the dogs too.  I addition to chocolate, I recently learned many dogs are very sensitive to grapes and raisins, only taking a few to kill them.  Zylitol, a new sweetener used in sugar free gums, can drastically reduce their blood sugar level.  It is best to limit the shrimp and such insuring that most of the dogs calories come from a completed and balanced dry dog chow meeting AAFCO standards.  You don't want to give her anything that has laid around and spoiled either.  If this has dragged along this long, it may be time to see a vet, certainly if she is not better by Monday.

Labs' biggest health hazard may be overweight.  Many of them have the appetite to attain a seal like build. Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them.  Each dog is different.  Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food adjusted to its individual needs.
