Question
I am trying to research some of the dogs that my family and I think we might like to own.  We resently lost a dear family pet and are looking to have another dog that would be good for our children.  I have a daughter that is 5 and my youngest is a boy, who is 2.  Are german Sheperds generally gentle with children?  What kind of behavior can I expect from this breed.  Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Trisha
There are many good breeds for families with children.  Including one of them are the German Shepherds.  BUT, I breed only the West German Lines, no American lines.  I feel that they are messing up the Shepherds to show them in American shows, therefore temperment is not as good, nor is the health as Dogs from Germany where they derive from?
A puppy is only as good as how you raise it in any breed of dog.  You raise it like another child, a kid in a fur coat.  I buy puppies from other countries and raise them into wonderful adults.  When I sell a puppy I give Patt's way in their folder so if they choose to raise a puppy the way I do they know how I do things.
Some other breeds: also as I say are only as good as how u raise it are:
Schnauzers, Poodles, Boston Terriers, Labs, Retrievers.
Of course I am partial to the gorgeous Shepherd, the Intelligence of them compared to the other breeds, but one can find a good breeder of another breed and be successful in getting a fine puppy.  Keep it wormed, vetted, trained properly and part of the family.  I will not sell a puppy to be put into a fenced in yard and forgotten about, tied to a box, left outside, it must be part of the family, go with you, etc.
Research the Breeder, look at litters of puppies past and present, read testimonials, call and ask questions by phone, etc.

kind regards
patt
