My crazy lovable dog

Question
Hi Dawn-
We got our dog from a German Shepherd rescue.  Wolfie is a male approximately 2 years old.  My question is, my mother and I both work so he is home all day alone and we are concerned about him being bored.  He doesn't chew or destroy anything, but we want to make sure he's happy. We were thinking of 2 options.
1. Getting another dog.  Problem is he has not really been around other dogs, so how do we figure out if another dog would work in our house and if so, is there a particualar breed we should go for?  We thought about going back to the rescue and getting another German Shepherd or just adopting a mix breed.  Also, he is male, should we get a female or male?
2. Our other option is putting him in a local day care a few days a week, of course that is a little pricey.
Any advice you can give us would be great !
Thanks !!!!!

Answer
Hi Lori,  Most dogs tend to sleep durin the day anyway, so they don't really get bored.  They get more active in the afternoon & evening when most people get home.  Getting another dog can be double your trouble or double your pleasure.  Two dogs can get together and get in more trouble, or they can get together and keep each other company and prevent them from getting into trouble.  That is basically the luck of the draw when it comes to two dogs.  I always believe though that if you don't have a lot of time to spend with your dog, it is only fair to him to get him a companion as dogs are pack animals and psychologically it is better for them to have a companion if you can't be that companion.
Local day cares are nice, but as you say, it eventually runs into money.  Hope this helps.
