Staying at home alone all day?

Question
Hello.  I'm thinking of adopting a little cocker spaniel/king charles mix puppy.  My only concern is that I would be a "single parent" and I work 9-5 M-F.  I know that these breeds like to be by their owners a lot, and I'm prepared to give them all the attention in the world on nights and weekends.
My question is:  Would it help if I adopted TWO of the dogs?  There are two little sisters that I could adopt together.  Thanks!

Answer
Let's examine things from the beginning with "one dog" :)  First of all, good for you for considering your time, work schedule and how that will impact a dog.

A lot depends on the age of the dog.  If it's a puppy, the answer is no.  Puppies need to be fed 4 to 5 times a day - housebroken - socialized and that simply can't happen if they're alone
8 hours a day.  It's really somewhat akin to a human infant...so no!

But an older dog (and Rescues & Shelters are full right now with any breed you want) CAN adapt as long as you fit in that morning run and another as soon as you get home.  With maybe a dog walker mid-day or someone who can pop in and let him/her out.  8 hours is a long, long time for a dog to be home alone.  Basically it's just not fair.

Now..are there options?  Sure.  Can you take a puppy or any dog to work with you?  Can you pay for "doggie daycare"?  Parents or at-home friends nearby who'll cover for you?  Can you come home at lunchtime? Pay for a dog walker? This all has to be considered.

Dogs are social animals and you can run into huge problems with a bored dog staring at the walls all day.  So I'd strongly advise thinking it through.  It's a big responsibility and not to be undertaken because these girls are "so cute".  Tempting as that is :)

I'm happy to discuss this further with you.  You sound like a thoughtful and responsible person and if I can help figure out how you can do this - I will.  At this point with the information you've given I'd say no way.  Most especially because this is a young puppy (or two).  If you do not spend the time on training, socialization (a full time job) then this will have an unhappy ending.
