Question
QUESTION: Hello, I have just recently adopted a five year old Cocker. He had a ulcer on his eye and yeast infections in both ears. The vet did lab work and all was well, he is up to date on all shots. We are giving Rusty drops in the ears and eye drops. He recently had an episode where he started running into things and went blind for a two hour time period. He went back to normal, but I rushed him to the vet the following morning. They said it was a mild seizure and that it could happen again. Two days later all seemed to be well, when he started walking awkwardly, almost like he was waddling from side to side and holding on of his back legs up at times. he is usually a jumper and hops everywhere. He is having a hard time jumping and seems very withdrawn and sad. Please help! I am so scared I am going to lose him. Thanks for taking my question. Brooke

ANSWER: Brooke, do you have an Animal ER in your city?  He definitely needs to see a Neurologist.
You absolutely should take him in today.  At the least, take him into your own vet right away.

None of what you describe sounds like a seizure but if it was - then there are meds to control that.

Please let me know.  But this is serious and needs immediate attention.

QUESTION: Thanks for the quick reply, We have a family friend that is a vet and is coming tonight to see him, my mother went to check on him and he is still having the pelvic issues, vision is okay though, could he have hip dysplasia? We do not have a animal ER :(. We live in a pretty small town. Can we give him anything for pain? Thanks again for your concern. Brooke

Answer
I'd bet money it's not hip dysplasia.  It just doesn't happen that way.  I do hope he's confined ..meaning enforced rest.  I take it your vet gave you nothing either for the seizure (?) or for pain?  I hope your friend arrives equipped but I can't see how he can diagnose this at home.  he needs x-rays & probably an ultrasound.

I'm so sorry this is happening to the little guy and am hoping your friend can help.

Please ask him/her if he knows how to "feel" for a disc problem.  But do crate him and only take him out on leash to go to the bathroom.
