Running away

Question
HI. My Bichion Frise is nearly 2 years old. She has always walked well with me on and off the lead and is very loyal and obedient. However today on her walk a lovely king Charles came calmly towards her and she took off in the other direction as quick as lighting. I could not keep up and she was out of sight for a while. I finally got her with the help of some kind people but really thought i had lost her. Why all of a sudden would she act like this..she has never had problem with other dogs before???

Answer
Hi Jane
Could be one of many reasons usually though she may be coming into heat, but also Bichons go through a naughty stage at around two years of age and running away is just one of those behaviours. It is important to remember not to panic in this situation and never give chase, this simply encourages them to go even farther away. Always try to stop stand still and recall, you can also as you shout her name start to turn away , it would be very unusual for any dog not to want to follow its leader (you). For the next few walks I would keep on a lead and allow her to walk only a short distance then recall . It is important for all dogs to continue to train throughout their lives, even just 5 mins per day is how they remain focussed.
