My cat is very sensitive to change

Question
My cat is extremely sensitive to change in our household, something as little as letting another one of our cats go outside or cleaning is enough to set her off and make her urinate on our belongings -- beds, armchairs, dirty laundry, where ever.

She loves loves my dog, she sleeps in the same bed / on him and loves him to death. But lately, Bubba, the dog, hasn't been doing so well. Most likely he'll have to be put down later this week, he's really sick. This will definitely upset the kitty, and she'll pee EVERYWHERE. How do I deal with her? My dad will get rid of her if she has another "accident", she only has a few more chances left.

I really don't want to loose two pets in one week, please help.

Answer
Brittany,

The first thing you should do is take your cat to the vet. She may have a urinary tract infection. They are painful and the cats associate the litterbox with the pain so they go elsewhere. He can also prescribe 'kitty Prozac' for her to calm her and help with her stress. It is very popular and the short term treatment is usually for two weeks. Longer if necessary.

Some cats are like people. They can be sensitive and high-strung and they stress easily. Be patient with her. She needs more reassurance and love than other cats need. You or your dad shouldn't get mad at her. That will only stress and confuse her more. Especially if she can't help her behavior because of medical issue.

Cats don't just pee inappropriately for no reason. It is their way of telling you that they are upset about something. You just need to find out what that something is. With your cat it could be that she senses the dog is sick and she is upset and stressed by it.
Google 'cat grief' and you can find some articles on how to deal with a cat grieving.

I'm sorry about your dog. Here is an excellent site for emotional support for you. It is a beautiful site when you lose a pet friend.
