Splitting Claws

Question
Hi,

I have two 7 month old kittens and recently checked their claws. I noticed they are dried and split at the ends, similar to a hair that has split ends. They are inside most of the day while we are at work and in the afternoon and evening they are outside playing before coming inside to sleep, so I don't want to restrict their 'outside time' to stop the splitting claws (which, I'm guessing, may be caused by climbing trees and so on?). I was wondering what would cause the splitting, how I can fix it, and if it's painful for the kittens...Thanks heaps, Laura xo

Answer
Hi Laura,

It is not a good idea to let cats/kittens outside at any time.  They are at risk for catching diseases, and being hurt.  Do you regularly clip the ends of their claws?  That will help them not to split so badly.  Cat's claws do split naturally, and there isn't much you can do about it.  I doubt it is painful, and they sharpen their claws on stuff to help alleviate that situation.  I wouldn't worry about it too much unless it is causing them to bleed.  I know it is tempting and seems natural for them to go outside, but it really is not a good idea.  As they grow older they will want to stray away from home.  They pick up diseases so easily on their paws from where other cats have been.  And most of the diseases are very harmful and often fatal.  Just please be careful with them.  They do not have to go outdoors to be happy kitties.  Good luck, and write again if you think I can help.  Barb
