QuestionI have a cat that is 10 years old and has always been the only cat in the house (I have the cat since she was 6-8 weeks old). In January I got an 8-month old kitten and I am having a problem with the old cat accepting the kitten into the house.
Can you help me or give any suggestions with this problem?
AnswerHI Kathy!
Here is a suggestion that worked for a friend of mine. Go and buy some of those cat balls... the kind that are plastic with a bell inside.... .tie a string or ribbon to one and then to the other. Place it under a door to a room. Put one cat in one room and shut the door. Let them play with the toy between them for a few days. This seems to get them used to each other and the new smells that come with the "intruder" , the new kitten. Gradually let them out to sniff each other, then separate them again. There will be some hissing and growling, and your older cat my take a swipe or two.....but eventually, they will be playing and sleeping together. I have never had a problem introducing new animals......I just let them get used to each other slowly before putting them together permanently . Be sure to give your older cat lots of attention!
Good luck and God bless!
