Kitten peeing

Question
My kitten is about 8 months old. I found him at 6 weeks old last fall. He began peeing in the litter box very easily. I have taken him to my parents house and even though he was scared and hid under the bed all day, he never peed other than in his litter box.

The problem is I have now found wet areas on the floor of the kitchen a couple times. It hasn't smelled or had a color that I can tell, so I'm really not sure if it's somehow spilled water or what. Last night I found a wet spot pretty close to his food and water, which seemed like a weird spot for him to pee. When I showed it to him and acted a little angry, he then rubbed against me seeming to be looking for approval. He's not usually very affectionate, so I assumed that was an admission of guilt, but I'm still not certain. He is an indoor cat home alone all day while I'm at work. Last night I had stopped in very briefly and run out again, so I was wondering if it could be vengeance for not being around.

My question is do you think this is him peeing on the floor? Would I notice the smell or color? If you think it could be him peeing, what should I do when he does this to discourage it? I scoop his litter box every day and clean it out regularly.

Thank you,

Sheila

Answer
It is not odd for a cat to respond badly to changes in environment or other changes, in your schedule for example. But I cannot be sure what is happening. They do sell a sort of black light in some pet shops which will reveal urine stains if you want to check for that. But assuming there is no other pssible cause for wet spots, I would say continue to keep the litter box very clean and try to keep your cat's environment from changing too much or often - the time at your parents sounds like kitty was really unhappy. Beyond that, place the litterbox and kitty's food permanently in a part of the house that you can close off when you aren't home - a room with a door. At least this way you will keep kitty in closed quarters - tightening his territory - and this may help keep things in check. Scolding hime while pointing to a wet spot will accomplish nothing - he won't understand for discipline purposes nor would he be apologizing. Please let me know if this helps.
