Question
i have kitten one week old the mom had a litter of three 2 died. well i weigh this kitten every day. it puts on an ounce a day but it doesnt seem to eat for very long how long shold a kitten suckle for? also all it does is sleep is this normal?

Answer
Yes, it's normal for a newborn to sleep all day.  I'm glad you're weighing the baby!  That's the best way to tell if they're healthy.  But an ounce a day is quite a bit for a one-week-old.  Normally, it's only 1/4 - 1/2 oz daily.  Are you making sure he's going to the bathroom?  He should be having a bowel movement daily and should be urinating after each meal.  If he is having regular bowel movements, then I would say he's just a very healthy eater!

As for suckling, milk flows out of a bottle more quickly than out of the teats, so feeding times are often shorter.  You should take note of the amount he eats, though.  The average one-week-old will eat 10-15 cc's or ml's every 2-3 hours.
