Question
i have two five month kittens they are sisters.they were born in a barn and for the first two months had no contact with humans. the old lady was going to kill them so we said we would have them, she caught the first one very quickly and she soon became very tame and loving.we didnt get the other for four weeks later as she had great problems catching her,how she did we dread to think and that is the problem.she is a lovely cat but we just cannot get her to come to us.she comes into our living room and kitchen and sits looking at you but the moment you move she is off.if she is asleep in her basket you only have to move a foot or get up and she is off,it is such a shame as we so much want to pick her up and love her,but you cannot get to her to do this, can you suggest what we can do,we have had her 2months now and are pulling our hair out as to how we can get her to trust us

Answer
The age of socialization in cats is very young, from about 3-7 weeks of age.  This means that is when they are most impressionable, so anything you want them to get used to you want to expose them to it at that age.  Since you didn't catch the second kitten at the same time as the first, she has already learned to be wary of people.  Although in time (it could take a long time) she may get used to you, she is never likely to become affectionate like the younger kitten.  She may eventually even let you come up and pet her, but most likely she will continue to be aloof the rest of her life.
