kitten for our 13 year old older cat?

16:24:35

Question
I am not sure whether it would be good or bad to get our 13 year old cat a kitten/friend. Our older cat is very territorial, needy and doesn't like 'most' other people aside from us! But then because of those reasons I wonder if it could be good for her? She has become very lonely and we travel alot. I feel so guilty when we come home sometimes and she seems lonely. This wasn't an issue before, but it seems to be one now. I want to do the best thing for her - what would that be? Now, not sure it matters but with other humans - she hates them at first but has gotten used to 'some' family and friends that come over. It's funny that she likes some but not others - it's very unusual. And the people she dislikes entails serious spitting/hissing/growling.... Help!

Answer
Hi Nora,

Getting her a companion would be great for her since you travel. The best thing you could do is get a kitten. And one that is not too old. I would suggest one between 8-12 weeks old. Older cats seem to tolerate a little one and accept it easier in the household. Just make sure you are around for a while to be there while the little one gets acclimated to the household. Also remember that a kitten is going to have a lot more energy than your older one and will be in alot more things in the house.
I would also get a male. I find that the older cats accept male kittens better than females. Good luck in what you do.

Ciao, Karen
