Answer
Faye,

Cats should not be introduced "cold turkey"!!!!!  You have just taken your 8 month old and turned his world upside down.  He does not know how to react to this new interloper you have introduced.

In a few days to a week or so, he should calm down.  It may take him a few days, a few weeks, or a few months to accept the new cat.  Your 8 month old is acting completely normally.

A few tips:  Lavish extra affection, attention, and treats on the 8 month old, so he won't feel that the new cat is a bad thing!

You may have to add a litter pan in a different part of the household until the two cats come to terms.  You might be wise to feed them on separate food dishes for a while.

If, when you approach him, he is unsure, stop approaching him, ignore him, make pretend he does not exist.  Pet him only when he demands affection.

Also, now that they have met each other separating them will be counter-productive.  Human interference will be counter-productive.  The hissing and spitting is normal and part of how cats get to know each other.  We poor humans do not really understand how cats inter-relate.  So, the best thing to do is to leave them be.  Grit your teeth and ignore the noise and even any loose fur.  These two will most probably not hurt each other.

If they begin chasing one or the other, even if it ends up in a "fight", this will be a good sign.

So, you will just have to give them time and let them come to terms in their own time in their own way.

Best regards... Norm.
