chewing out

Question
I don't know if I stressed my 7 year old cat out by accepting a kitten.  The 7 year old, Simba, is neutered and declawed.  The kitten is a female, I believe abasinian and tabby.  I have noticed over the last week on the inside of Simba's legs and under his left front paw he is chewing his hair out, down to the skin.  He is on Advantage and Heartguard, is the kitten causing him to do this and if so, what do I do?
Thanks in advance,
Kimberly

Answer
Hi Kimberly,
The chewing and pulling out of hair is definitely a nervous behavior that isn't good.  How did the introduction of them go?  Typically new cats should be separated for 3 weeks before letting them be together.  If you introduced them too soon, put the kitten in a room of her own and start from scratch.  Feed them smelly wet food on opposite sides of the door so they can form a positive association with each other.

If you introduced them slowly and kept them apart and this is still occuring, I would place a call to the vet.  They may be able to prescribe some medication to calm him down.
