Question
Why does my girl cat give deep cries when she wakes up.  She's not fully grown yet but not a kitten either.  I wouldn't think she is going into heat this young.  She goes out into another room and does it and when I look at her she meows normal.  Please help

Answer
Hi Angela,

Don't worry, that's perfectly normal.  I have no idea why they do it but I've had lots of them do it over the years, its almost as though they've lost sight of you and are not sure if you're still there.  When you answer her meow she's comforted to have you there and goes back to her regular meow.  My deaf cat does it the most, I guess because he can't hear me moving around like the others do.
Cats can go into heat around 6 months old and generally become very friendly and may make short little mewing sounds, although some do get to yowling.  They will also crouch down with their chest on the ground and their butt in the air or they may scoot along on their butt.  If you get her fixed before she goes into her first heat it will reduce her risk of getting breast cancer (yes, cats can get breast cancer) considerably.
