Question
i have 4 cats, adopted, all are neutered/spayed - but 3 of them are losing hair, have bumps - one doesn't - is this hormonal?  Why do 3 of them have problems and one doesn't?

Answer
Hi Kai.  I really haven't seen hormones cause skin bumps in any spayed/neutered cats.  Sounds possible it's something contagious, so I would start with a vet visit.  Skin bumps can be caused by parasitic mites or by contagious fungal infections.  You may have heard of mange, which is caused by mites, or ringworm, which is a rash caused by a fungus.  Both can cause hair loss and bumps on the skin.

Some cats' immune systems are able to fight off these pests on their own, which could explain why your 4th kitty doesn't have any symptoms while the other three do IF any contagious disease is diagnosed.

Other reasons for these symptoms could include a reaction to a food ingredient, or an allergy or auto immune disease.  Many cats are allergic to grains in their food, such as corn or wheat.  Flea allergies are another common reason for skin inflammation.  If no parasite or infection is found, then your vet might recommend a low allergy diet or an injection of cortisone to combat any allergic reaction or auto immune response the kitties are suffering.
