Provera safe for cats?

14:46:42

Question
I have a young female cat.
Since a couple of weeks she keeps us up in the middle of the night because she is in heath.
In a crouching stance etc.
We went to a pharmacy and the doctor gave Provera 5mg-10mg tablets and said she should take 1 every week.
But i read the note included in the package carefully and there isn't anything that says the medicine is ok to use on animals.

Can anyone tell me if it's safe for my cat or not?
Thank you

Answer
Hi Kevin,

Honestly, I am not a vet or vet tech, so I am not familiar offhand with particular drugs, however according to the brief research I've done online (which you can do as well), it is NOT safe in the least.  This Time article in particular was interesting and references testing done in animals was shown to cause cancer amongst other things.

Personally, my recommendation would be to get her spayed, which would eliminate the need for the medication at all.  I'm not familiar with pet care in Belgium, but in the United States, it is imperative that all animals are spayed/neutered because 4 million cats and dogs are euthanized every year do to the pet overpopulation problem. Spaying can prevent cancer, and will prevent bleeding, behavioral issues such as aggression, roaming, yowling, and most importantly, eliminate the possibility of her contributing to the pet overpopulation problem.  I hope the article helps, and wish you the best of luck.  Have a great day!
