Question
Hi Tina, I have a stray that shows up everyday, he/she is very affectionate and can be petted without incident save one peculiar reaction, he/she hisses while being petted , then purrs then rolls over on his/her back and acts very content, but then will jump up and hiss again; never shows any aggression, just seems confused whether to purr or to hiss...lol...why is this happening? Ireally feel bad for the little guy, he/she seems very healthy and alert, just hisses a lot. thanks, Nick

Answer
HI Nick,

That's pretty common, a feral cat learning to trust people will do something like roll on his back, then suddenly feel like he has gone too far and scares himself. It is also possible that this cat is showing "hypersynesthesia" a condition in cats where touches feel overstimulating to them - they like the feeling at first but it quickly turns into a ticklish feeling for them. However I am guessing it's just that this cat is not quite sure if he should trust you 100% yet. If you are able to trap the cat and bring him in to be spayed/neutered, you will be doing him and the community a huge favor as well. Most areas have free spay/neuter programs ask your local human society or go to www.alleycat.org to find resources in your area. Good luck!
