Introducing two cats

Question
So I have a two year old female that we have had for a year, and we just adopted a four month old male kitten. He's is kept in one room and she is kept in the rest of the house. She came up to the door and they talked to eachother (not being aggressive) and she was a little nervous. Then later, we put them in the same room togethor. I held her and my mom held him. She was nervous, but he wanted to come over and play with her. So I put her down and my mom kept holding him and she hid but eventually she just sat in the middle of the room calmy and watched him. The next day we put them both on the ground and he ran over to her (not in an aggressive way) and she growled and hissed at him. We watched them for a bit and every time he came within a foot or two of her, she would growl and hiss (but not swipe). I want them to get along and be able to cuddle and play with eachother. What should we do? Is this normal? Will she ever stop hissing? He isn't aggressive to her, he really wants to play with her, but I think she is scared of him.

Answer
Mollye,

What you are seeing is perfectly normal and part of the ":getting toi know you ritual" cats go through.

The best thing to do is to leave them be and let them work out there relationsship with no human intervention.  If you hear that they seem to be having world war III, ignore it. They will not hurt each other. There should be no human intervention unless somebody draws blood. They make take to each other within a few days to a week or it may take a number of months.  They will figure out how they are going to get along with each other. Now that they are running together, you do not want to separate them again!!!!!!!

What you must remember is that cats do not think like we do, so it is a mistake to ascribe human motives and emotions to cats.  One thing which is clear is that we humans do not really understand the whys and wherefors of cat interactions.

One thing you might do is that you might give your established cat extra attention and treats, especially if you play with the new kitten or give it treats.

Please let me know how it goes.

Best regards.. Norm.
