Question
Hi, i recently got 2 kittens they are about 6 weeks old. I also had a grown male cat that doesn't stay around much...now hes around a lot and keeps taking one of them away under my deck. I can get the kittens back easily but he keeps doing it and when i take them away he sits there and meows ..but its a really low and almost moaning meow its weird..but what should i do? is he trying to kill my kittens or does he just want to play with them or something?

Answer
Hi Adrienne
This is a very strange behaviour by the cat. If he meant them any harm you would know straight away because he would be hissing and fighting with the kittens

I am concerned that you have kittens at such a young age, they should not have been away from their mum for at least another six or seven weeks. I think the big boy is trying to protect these kittens for harm. Please do consider that these kittens are very very young and they need care and attention. They should also be taken down the the vet at about 9 weeks old and then again at 12 weeks old for vaccinations against FIV, FELV and other diseases that your local vet may consider necessary.

Also do please think about what has happened to mum and any other kittens that may have been in the litter.
Finally if the grown male is going out all the time he may be exposed to many diseases and of course if he is entire then you need to be sure that the two kittens cannot be mated. In this case you may need to ask your vet about neutering of the kittens to prevent unnecessary litters.
Kittens are so beautiful and exciting at this young age so enjoy them.
