crusty dog

Question
I recently met a cocker spaniel that is crusty and bald all over. Three years ago she was completely furry but had some crusty spots and some outstanding tumors that are still there. The owner says that when she found the dog the veterinarians she went to ran tests, etc. and the dog never got any better. I think the dog has sarcoptic mange and have talked the owner into letting me give the dog ivermectin. The dog is very old and currently is having much difficulty with her hind leg/s. She is now on some asprin (about 1/8 tablet baby asprin, twice per day)and it seems to really help her, to the point that she can get up and stand and walk by herself, even trying to climb stairs again.

How can we get her to lose the scabs and regrow her fur and what else can we do about making her more self mobile?

Answer
For the skin, there may be a skin infection or a low thyroid level. If there is mange, then a dipping in a special insecticide called AMITRAZ may be needed to treat the mange.

For the arthritis, I use a drug called PREVICOX for the pain and if the X-rays show bone spurs or degenerative arthritis, I use an injectible medication called Adequan to help build up the cartilage and decrease the inflammation.
